Brindisi Province

The Provincial administration of Brindisi, in relation to the regulations given by the Italian legislator, does institutional activities above its territory. In particular the following subjects are dealt administratively: the defence of the territory and environment, cultural goods, road network and provincial transport, school building for secondary school, hunting, and fishing in the inside waters, technical and administrative assistance to the other Local Authorities.

Province of Brindisi works in the European and Transnational Cooperation field through the European Policies Department. It is part of "Arco Adriatici-Ionico" Association. The aim of this body is to take part in Euro-Adriatic Region in order to strengthen the cooperation and integration with countries beyond Adriatic sea, as part of this Association.

During the last five years Province of Brindisi has implemented some projects about Environmental Protection such as:

1. Year 2000 "Parks" and "Coasts" projects: study about coastal protected areas.
2. Year 2000 "Protected Natural Areas Planning and Managing Tools" (ex regional law 19/97).
3. Year 2004 "Selsy- sea land system" project (Community Programme Life - Environment).
4. Year 2005 "Spalcat" CIP Interreg III A Italy-Albania, measure 3.1 action c).
5. Year 2005 2005 "Amjowels" - Southern Adriatic and Ionic wet lands system- CIP Interegg III A Italy Albania, measure 2.1 section a)
6. Year 2005 "Bascam" - CIP Interegg III A Italy - Albania measure 2.1 section b).

An Italian law (Law 9 December 1998 no 426) includes the land around Brindisi among the Environmental Risk Areas. In fact, in Province of Brindisi a lot of municipalities have started Agenda 21 Processes, so this project will be another important step on this way.

About enterprises and sustainable development it is a partner of SIPART (Integrated System Landscape, country architecture and tourism) project. POR Puglia (Apulia Operative Regional Programme) 2000 - 2006 Measure 6.2. The budget of this project is €1.600.000,00

Province of Brindisi is partner of some other projects regarding our Mediterranean ancient traditions, such us:

• "ORMA" Project. (Restoration and Recovery of ligneous and historically valuables organs and manufactured articles) INTEREGG III A ITALY - ALBANIA, POR Measure 4.1, Action 3 E. the budget of this project is €248.224,00.
• "VITEG" Project. (Travels in twin lands. Albanian culture promotion in Italy). INTEREGG III A ITALY - ALBANIA Measure 4.3. The Budget of this project is €340.000,00.
• "PUGLI ALBANIA. Communities and cultures Network", INTEREGG A ITALY - ALBANIA, Measure 4.1, Action 3 A-B-C. The Budget of this project is €787.000,00.
